TopoAkustiko Basic Difference

The basic difference between TopoAkustiko (symphony for 64 strings in 4 seating arrangements) as two-correlative music work and the traditional one-correlative ones

Confronting different subjects (recipients) with a one-correlative art (music, painting), the object is ‘understood’ differently, since there are no objective criteria in art_ especially by recipients of different socio-cultural backgrounds. It is, on the whole, the same with regard to social aspects.

We define understanding as being the act of discerning two interrelated entities: it is the moment when the discernment of two correlative entities takes place_ we relate something with something.

Whereas the act of rational understanding is accomplished by the perception of two coinciding objective entities (correlates), the ideological understanding takes place when the object as one correlate is encountered by the recipient embodying both the discerning subject and the complementary correlate: the act of ‘understanding’ is accomplished through the projection of the recipient’s own predispositions, experiences, associations_ that is through his own subjective components entrenched mainly in the socio-cultural ambiance[1].

To focus on a rational, non-ideological understanding, let us picture a stone falling into water. The two different manifestations, the acoustic and the optic, are two discernible correlates stemming from one and the same occurrence. The understanding of the one depends on the other (it would not be understandable if water would not move or there would be no noise).

Usually we only observe (discern) social phenomena, missing the concrete corresponding correlate to understand. The problem is replacing occurrence with word (interpretation: it is this ‘interpretation’ which we confuse with ‘understanding’), and the word is always the word of the ruler (‘Im Anfang war das Wort, und das Wort war bei Gott’. Or as Marx said: der herrschende Gedanke ist der Gedanke des Herrschenden). The problem is dominion of word (i.e. ideology: “illusion, misrecognition, ignorance”[2]) over occurrence:

“A Chinese proverbial saying: the scheming prime minister of the second Ch’in emperor (3rd century, B.C.) trying to determine who among countries were his followers, pretended that a deer presented in court was actually a horse. All those who insisted it was a deer were later eradicated” (Thomas S. Szasz).

They are two inherent correlates of the occurrence (as the object of perception), outside of the recipients, necessary for a rational understanding, and equal for all recipients.

There is in TopoAkustiko no sound that is not correlated to an optic event and vice versa. The musicians have to move themselves in order to play and produce sound. This movement, by an ever-changing group of players, generates continuously optically perceivable figures, which are composed just as is the music itself.

The object presented here_ playing TopoAkustiko in front of an audience_ is split into two dimensions: the optic and the acoustic, as two correlates emerging out of one and the same occurrence. Hence, the Two-Correlative character of the piece. Discerning these two correlates in the just occurring event, outside of the subject as listener-viewer, makes possible an ‘understanding’ which takes place beyond and independent of the recipient’s subjective components. Discern becomes cognition. It is an objective, non-ideological, understanding and for all recipients the same. This dimension of the piece treats all recipients equally, emancipates them: ie liberates them from restraint imposed by the culture (in the last instance religion)_, liberates them from an specific imposed-‘worldoutlook’. What was that sound? It was the triangle over there. What was that triangle? It was that sound (see example page 10 of the score).

In the first three seating arrangements, there are precise geometrical and other easily discernible orders of the placement of each category of strings[3]. In the last seating arrangement, the order is chaotic. Here, when the orchestra plays_ the way the instruments, one after another, start to play_, it is the way we write the following words_ the fourth movement (seating arrangement) is made up only by these words:

NIEDER MIT DER GEWALT

ES MÖGE IN DER WELT LIEBE UND FRIEDEN HERRSCHEN

Down with violence.  May love and peace prevail (in the world)

[1]Even in the natural sciences: ‘The results scientists obtain and the technological applications they investigate, will be conditioned by their frame of mind, that is, their concepts, thoughts, and values… Heisenberg showed that the patterns scientists observe in nature are intimately connected with the patterns of their minds… Science is not value-free’ (Fritjof Capra, Charlene Spretnak).

“However”, observes Louis Althusser, “while admitting that they do not correspond to reality, i.e. that they constitute an illusion, we admit that they do make allusion to reality, and that they need only be ‘interpreted’ to discover the reality of the world behind their imaginary representation of that world (ideology = illusion/allusion)… Ideology represents” also “the imaginary relationship of individuals to their real conditions of existence”.
